Torquay Golf Club: Juniors Jump for Free Membership at Glenn Oakes’ Charity Day

Torquay Golf Club‘s assistant golfing pro, Glenn Oakes presided over a successful combined Junior Open Day and Charity Golf Day last Saturday.

Over 50 juniors attended, some established young golfers and some swinging the club for the very first time, with the club offering every one of them a FREE membership!

“I don’t think that has ever been done before…but (it) was definitely worth it!” said Oakes. “We had fantastic feedback from the event…this resulted in 50 children signing up to our junior section and also a parent signing up for a full adults’ membership!”

Even Rory started somewhere – South Devon children get the golfing bug.

All children were also provided with a voucher for 5 free one-on-one lessons with Glenn, who explained: “The pathway we have set will require the child to use the lessons to then be ready to take on the course and be ready both ability and golf knowledge-wise.
“We are very excited to see the evolution of the Junior section at Torquay Golf Club and this Open Day was the perfect way to start the year off; more events are in the pipeline with a target of signing up 100 new children by the end of the year!
“As well as the Junior Open Day we ran an individual competition for members and a prize raffle, with proceeds going to my chosen charity for 2016: THHN (Torbay Holiday Helpers Network). We had a field of 105 players take part in the competition with ‘nearest the pins’, chipping and putting challenges and also a ‘nearest the mannequin’ competition. On the day we managed to raise £303 for the charity!
“Id like to give a huge thanks to all those who helped on the day and also to our fantastic sponsors of the event (Taylormade, Callaway, Mizuno, Brand Fusion, Jimmy Gough Golf, Mike Priest, Torquay United FC & Hewett Electrical).”
