Ten-Man Gillingham Scrape a Point at Homers Heath

Given their two heavy defeats to Buckland last season, and the dismissal of Philip Ormrod in the first half, Dorset side Gillingham will have been the happier of the two sides as they left Homers Heath with a point on Saturday afternoon.

After having won their first league game, away at Bridport, Buckland Athletic were looking for a winning start to their first run out at Homers Heath. Things seemed to be going their way when Gavin Hammon capitalised on a defensive mix up to fire the Yellows in front in the first half. Buckland then lost Jared Lewington, who scored the only goal at Bridport, to an injury while things went from bad to worse for the visitors, Philip Ormrod dismissed for an off-the-ball incident.

After the break, Buckland sought the match-winning second goal and came close on a couple of occasions, once when goalkeeper Will Agbo missed a kick, relieved to see the ball also miss his post and again when Richard Groves appeared to be tripped in the box (see below).

Nevertheless, it looked as if Hammon’s goal would be enough until Jan Vance popped up with an equaliser five minutes from time.

Buckland travel to Sherborne Town on Wednesday night. Sherborne are another Dorset side over which Bucks did the double last season. Can they repeat the feat to maintain their perfect away record?
