Kelly Aims to Dispel Myths with Pole Fitness Fundraiser

Dance fitness instructor Kelly Shaw is determined to clean up the image of pole dancing as she limbers up for a ten hour ‘Poleathon’ at Torbay Leisure Centre from 8am to 6pm tomorrow.

“It’s nothing sleazy. It’s going to be pole sit-ups, press-ups, squats, lunges – everything you can think of” – Kelly Shaw, Polemix

“It’s basically a day of fitness,” explained Kelly. “There’s going to be two poles and, as long as there’s somebody on the pole for ten hours, we’re going to rotate and keep giving each other a break.

“It’s literally exercise, nothing sleazy. It’s going to be pole sit-ups, press-ups, squats, lunges – everything you can think of to do with exercise. It’s been done in London and the north but never here,” she added.

And it is the first Poleathon for Kelly herself, although she has done marathons and other charity fitness events in the past.

As Torbay Leisure Centre have donated the use of their hall for free, there is no entry cost for spectators, although there will be bucket donations in aid of Rowcroft. The participants are also being sponsored to raise further funds.

“Anyone’s welcome to join in,” said Kelly, who will also be hoping to raise awareness for pole fitness itself. “All they have to do is sign a disclaimer and an information form and I’ll warm them up and I’ll let them have a go on the pole.”

If you can’t make the event, you can still support Kelly and her team via their Just Giving page.

If you are interested in Pole Fitness classes, Kelly runs Polemix classes from the Pure Balance Studio on Teignmouth Road, Torquay.
